Obviously I couldn't not post a new blog on the day that my favorite filmmaker—and the namesake of my musical and artistic identity—has passed away. I made my erasererhead YouTube page in May for the sole purpose of posting a Twin Peaks retrospective, and I blame the third season of Twin Peaks for never finishing that video. Because what the hell can you say about a show after that?
I first watched Eraserhead as a teenager, and to this day I consider it to be one of his three best films alongside Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man. What never ceased to amaze me about Lynch is how he got some career-defining performances from the actors in his films, and yet he'll still probably be remembered more for his weird visuals and sound than that very overlooked fact. I still get chills thinking about Dennis Hopper's performance in Blue Velvet. As a former community theater performing schmuck, maybe the one thing that has ever wanted me to get back to acting was watching that performance.
Thanks, David, for all the great weird movies. I hope you're hanging out in the afterlife now with some rabbits or whatever else you brought with you up there.
